PUMA Launches Its Fastest Race-Day Sneaker Yet: The Fast-R NITRO Elite 3

Just in time for the 2025 Boston Marathon, PUMA is dropping the most advanced performance shoe in its arsenal—the Fast-R NITRO Elite 3. Lightweight, science-backed, and loaded with elite-level race tech, this “super shoe” is built for those looking to shatter personal records.

Science Meets Speed

The Fast-R NITRO Elite 3 isn’t just hype—it’s been lab-tested. A study led by biomechanics expert Wouter Hoogkamer at the University of Massachusetts Amherst revealed that the sneaker improves running economy by 3.15% compared to its predecessor. That might sound like a modest number, but for a 3-hour marathon runner, it could mean over four minutes shaved off your finish time. Every runner in the study showed improved performance metrics while wearing the shoe.

Hoogkamer summed it up best: “Running was easiest—requiring the least metabolic energy—in the Fast-R 3. From years of research, we know those lab improvements translate to faster race times.”

Built for the Podium

Shedding nearly 100 grams compared to the Fast-R NITRO Elite 2, this latest version is the lightest race-day shoe PUMA has ever made. It features:

  • NITROFOAM ELITE midsole for next-level energy return and cushion
  • Redesigned PWRPLATE that extends through the toe for powerful propulsion
  • ULTRAWEAVE upper for breathable support
  • PUMAGRIP outsole for serious traction on any surface

At just 170 grams, with a 40mm/32mm stack and 8mm drop, the Fast-R NITRO™ Elite 3 is engineered for peak performance over 300km (or 200 miles) of elite-level racing.

Endorsed by Olympians & Everyday Runners

Canadian Olympian Rory Linkletter calls it “the most radical ride I’ve ever experienced,” while Rena Elmer, a 41-year-old runner from Texas chasing a sub-2:30 finish in Boston, swears by its fluidity and speed: “Definitely my favorite racing shoe—I’m confident I’ll PR in them.”

The Fast-R NITRO Elite 3 isn’t just for elites either. Over 200 amateur runners participating in PUMA’s Project3 initiative will be racing in them this spring for a shot at a new PR—and a $3,000 prize.

Limited Launch

The Fast-R NITRO Elite 3 will first drop exclusively at “The High Point”, PUMA’s immersive Boston Marathon experience in partnership with Marathon Sports, located at 745 Boylston Street, from Friday, April 18th to Just in time for the 2025 Boston Marathon, PUMA is dropping the most advanced performance shoe in its arsenal—the Fast-R NITRO™ Elite 3.
